Southern Scuffle Preview

Southern Scuffle
College wrestling’s premier in-season tournament is bigger than ever in 2014 as 34 teams converge in Chattanooga, TN, on January 1–2 for the Southern Scuffle.

For the third year in a row, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host the nation’s toughest in-season wrestling tournament at McKenzie Arena. Presented by Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling, the Southern Scuffle features four of the top five teams from the 2013 NCAA Championships, including defending NCAA Champion Penn State, which will be favored to defend its Scuffle title from last year. But don’t hand over the trophy just yet, powerhouses Minnesota, Oklahoma State, and Cornell won’t make it easy for the Nittany Lions.

“The field is loaded again this year,” says Chattanooga head coach Health Eslinger. “Obviously, the team to beat is defending NCAA and Scuffle Champion Penn State, but it won’t be easy for them. Individually, the list goes on and on with some of the nation’s best wrestlers in every weight class.”

Four 2013 NCCA Champs will be in the field of more than 400 wrestlers. Penn State is led by NCAA Champs David Taylor (165 lbs.) and Ed Ruth (184 lbs.), while Oklahoma State’s Chris Perry (174 lbs.) and Minnesota’s Tony Nelson (285 lbs.) will try to push their respective teams to victory.
